Position Primary Purpose: As the principle accounting officer, you can mentor a team of highly efficient and effective accounting professionals and manage the activities of the Credit Union’s general accounting systems, financial information reporting, and external reports. You will also excel at financial analytics and developing processes that benefits the organization and helps drive business units. You will be an innovator, looking for ways to use data and technology to insure the Credit Union stays on top of trends and efficiencies.


Essential Functions

Use discretion and independent judgment while managing the functions of the Accounting Department.

The Controller serves as the Credit Union’s secondary financial executive and is responsible for the Credit Union’s fiscal record keeping activities.

Mentor and develop a direct team, managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluations, and the building of an effective team dynamic.



Interview, select, train, evaluate, supervise, schedule, coach, develop and discipline department employees, using appropriate interpersonal management skills. Ensure department staff is providing responsive and professional service.



Use financial and communication skills to develop and improve our financial processes and systems contributing to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the team and add value to the Credit Union.

Provide technical support for the general accounting staff and business managers related to accounting principles and requirements, operational enhancements, procedural recommendations and determinations, assistance in resolving accounts payable vendor discrepancies, and research assistance.

Ensure department processes and procedures are properly documented, the department staff appropriately cross-trained, and the department’s Business Continuity Plan is properly maintained and tested.



Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the financial reports for the overall Credit Union, individual cost centers and lines of business within the Credit Union. Responsible for being aware of current and implementing any changes to US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory reporting requirements.

Participate in the budgeting and forecasting processes, including evaluating consolidated, business unit and branch results to ensure reasonableness given prior year performance and upcoming year financial objectives.

Ensure accounting staff complete required tasks including reconciling general ledger accounts, reviewing branch and line of business monthly financial results to ensure integrity, review accounts payable activities and other expenses to ensure compliance with policies and maintaining fixed asset accounting systems. Monitor accounts payable submissions for appropriateness of expenditures and proper authorization of expense.

Prepare internal monthly reporting package including summary financial results and budget versus plan results. Provide monthly variance analysis, rolling monthly income statement and balance sheet results to senior management team and update them on adherence to budgeted objectives.

Provide financial information for internal, external, and regulatory reporting purposes. Validate information that is relied upon for financial reporting. Prepare the call report and all other regulatory filings. Monitor and manage collateral positions, which support lending activities. Monitor and estimate regulatory capital positions. Monitor the Credit Union's investment portfolio and all related accounting entries.

Work with business unit managers in the analysis of new products and financial information provided by other departments to ensure compliance with existing and new regulatory requirements.



Complete all education, training and professional development required for position.



Demonstrate product knowledge and meet annual product and service certification requirements.



Comply with all state and federal regulations and compliance standards, including: Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Customer Information Privacy (CIP), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as well as Credit Union policies and procedures.



Ensure required records are retained in accordance with the Salal Records Retention Program and preserved in a careful and secure manner.













Qualifications:
Previous Experience: Performed successfully in an accounting department manager position within a financial organization for a minimum of five years.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or related field or equivalent work related experience required, advanced degree preferred. CPA or CMA preferred.
