Details:
The City of Sturgis is currently seeking a full time Wastewater Operator to operate and monitor pumps, settling tanks, aeration tasks, digesters and other equipment at the Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure conformance to acceptable standards. This position requires routine maintenance and repairs to treatment plant equipment, buildings and grounds.

Interested candidates are required to have a valid driver’s license and High School Diploma or equivalent. Candidates with Class D Municipal Michigan Wastewater treatment operator’s certification license, mechanical and/or electrical experience are preferred.


Qualifications:
By one year of employment:
• Must obtain a “D” Municipal Michigan Wastewater treatment operator’s certification
• Obtain a 40Hr HAZWOPER certificate
• Confined space training Duties include (but not limited to):
• Able to work rotating schedule
• Work overtime in emergency situations, some in an “on-call” basis when needed
• Willing to advance education
• Able to work in various weather conditions and sudden changes in temperature, both inside the treatment plant and outdoors
• Be a team player Physical Requirements:
• Ability to access all areas of the treatment plant
• Ability to climb stairs on a regular basis
• Ability to climb and descend ladders
• Ability to lift and move equipment and material weighing up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to kneel, crouch, and crawl in order to perform maintenance and repairs
• Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time in order to make inspections of plant operations
• Ability to walk on slippery surfaces
• Exposure to solvents, pesticides and herbicides
• Contact with oil and petroleum products, gasses and fumes
• Ability to use hand truck to move barrels of chemicals
• Ability to identify colors for laboratory testing
• Ability to discern differences in the sound and smell of the various steps of the process in order to recognize potential problems
