Description of Job
This Engineering Physical/Sciences Technician (EPST) III position will work in CDOT's Denver Metro Region 1 Right-of-Way Survey Unit responsible for creating Right-of-Way plans, property descriptions and researching property title history to respond to the needs of the Appraisal and Acquisition units. This position is responsible for supporting the Survey unit by serving as a field survey crew chief. This position will assist licensed Professional Land Surveyors.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Under the direction of a PLS, prepare right-of-way plans in accordance with established guidelines;
Acts independently as a Survey Party Crew Chief with experience as a field person, familiar with CDOT Survey Manual policies and procedures;
Obtains survey data by understanding survey datums, projections and Spatial Reference Networks; Set up and operate survey instruments including robotic total stations, data collectors, GPS system equipment, and digital levels; Responsible for training less experienced staff on the operation of survey equipment;
Collects topographic data for the preparation of topographical maps of highway lands and properties; calculate search data points for boundary location;
Under the direction of a PLS, prepare legal descriptions for parcels of land that will be encumbered by an easement or will need to be acquired in fee for projects;
Plot legal descriptions from deeds to check the accuracy of the descriptions;
Assist the PLS in gathering ownership data from CDOT databases, Title companies, public record facilities and private Information services;
Research record plats, surveys, maps, and legal documents to develop and reconcile property ownership;
Assures the reliability of field data by checking for errors in equipment settings, data transmission and data collection; utilizes computer software including MicroStation SS2 and SS4, Open Roads, Inroads and Trimble Business Center, using the CDOT TMOSS Coding system, for delivery of topographical files to roadway designers;
Responsible for calibrating equipment; checking survey instruments on National Geodetic Survey (NGS) calibration base lines;
Other job duties as assigned.
Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
Requires working outside in all weather conditions
Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
Required to operate CDOT vehicles
May be exposed to hazardous materials, various construction materials. MDS provided
May be required to perform the duties associated with staffing a road closure gate
Required to lift up to 60 lbs

HS Diploma or GED and seven years of full-time professional survey work experience, with at least one year where the primary duties included conducting field survey operations which included collecting data using computer systems to create deliverable survey files.
A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
Stronger candidates will be those that demonstrate depth and breadth of skill and ability, through a combination of professional experience and formal training, to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced Survey Technician and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
Proficiency in the use of current survey equipment, software, and technology;
Ability and knowledge to serve as a Survey Crew Chief;
Ability to, and experience with, conducting thorough research independently;
Experience applying survey codes and reviewing data independently;
Experience interpreting survey data and technical information;
Experience creating right-of-way plans using recent CADD programs;
Colorado LSI certification a plus;
Experience writing legal descriptions, interpreting deeds and analyzing boundaries;
Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner;
Ability to work with general public, professional, consultants, and staff, with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made and commitments;
Ability to negotiate mutually acceptable solutions and build consensus through give and take;

Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Gmail, SAP, MicroStation, InRoads, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
