Boulder Falls Slope Mitigation and Visitor Access Improvements
Contractor: Harrison Western
Client: City of Boulder – Open Space and Mountain Parks
The historic rains of 2013 that pummeled Boulder County, caused devastating floods, and wreaked havoc through each of the county’s canyons including Boulder Canyon which contains Boulder Falls. The trail to the falls, located between Boulder and Nederland, and its respective infrastructure providing safe visitor access were washed away and two existing gabion walls acting as a barrier between visitors below and potential rock fall above were severely damaged by rock and soil infiltration. Harrison Western was tasked with constructing new slope protection via a grouted rock wall and placement of rip rap, rock excavation to provide a wider and safer trail for visitors, and reconstructing the compromised gabion walls. The rugged, and somewhat remote location of the project came with extremely limited access which posed many unique challenges from mobilizing equipment to moving large boulders. Mark will discuss the techniques from various industries that were employed, modified, and optimized to help facilitate the successful completion of this project.
Mark Kroncke, P.E. is a Project Manager with Harrison Western and has 10 years of design and construction experience in heavy civil, geotechnical, and tunneling in the Rocky Mountain, Mid-Atlantic, and SF Bay Area regions. Mark earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University and an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from The University of Texas. His areas of expertise include earth retention, ground improvement, geotechnical instrumentation, slope mitigation, tunnel rehabilitation, tunneling methods in both soil and rock, and deep foundations. Mark has experience representing both the Owner and Contractor on various tunneling and geotechnical projects involving EPB TBM, SEM, and conventionally mined tunnels, deep slurry wall shafts, large diameter secant and tangent pile walls, compensation grouting, compaction grouting, jet grouting, pile driving, and cementitious pressure grouting.  Mark is a licensed professional in the state of California.
