Come meet Dick Thelen, one of the last 32 surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis. On 19 August 2017, a search team located the wreckage of the USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea at a depth of approximately 18,000 ft. She has been there over 70 years. In 1945, the Indianapolis, with a full crew of 1,196 men, delivered to United States Army Air Force Base at Tinian parts of “Little Boy” -- the first atomic bomb ever used in combat. Just days later, on July 30th, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Approximately 900 men went into the water—only 317 survived. It is the country's worst naval disaster after Pearl Harbor. Learn about Mr. Thelen’s experience on the Indianapolis, the attack, the aftermath and his amazing story of survival.
