Morning:
Participants will learn to address common problems associated with homeless patrons (e.g. odor, panhandling, etc.). The focus of this practical training is for frontline staff to have the tools they need to prevent/resolve problems while still remaining an inclusive library. Afternoon: A deeper dive into the concepts learned in the morning session, this training provides opportunities for participants to try out the tools and techniques they have learned in an interactive (and surprisingly fun) environment. Presenter: Ryan Dowd, Executive Director, Hesed House Ryan started volunteering at his local homeless shelter when he was 13 and started working there when he was 21. He became Executive Director of the second largest homeless shelter in Illinois immediately after law school. Ryan has worked with tens of thousands of homeless individuals. He accidentally became the foremost expert on homeless library patrons after a short Youtube video he made on the subject went viral. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided. Location
