You will have the opportunity to attend all three sessions.
Breakout Session 1:  Working with Those Experiencing Homelessness
Do you wish you felt more confident and comfortable approaching homeless patrons?  Do you wish you had the tools to prevent problems and help homeless patrons follow the rules?  Do you wish you understood homeless patrons better and why they do some of the things they do?  This super practical training is jam backed with skills and techniques you can use tomorrow to solve and prevent problems.

Presenter:   Ryan Dowd started volunteering at his local homeless shelter when he was 13 and started working there when he was 21.  He became Executive Director of the second largest homeless shelter in Illinois immediately after law school. Ryan has worked with tens of thousands of homeless individuals.  He accidentally became the foremost expert on homeless library patrons after a short Youtube video he made on the subject went viral.

Breakout Session 2: Opioid Epidemic in Ohio
This session will include information covering the history of the epidemic, the current situation, ways to identify those affected and how to assist them, related concerns for public facilities and examples of how libraries in Ohio are assisting to combat the epidemic.

Presenter:  Jennifer Biddinger is the Director of Drug Abuse Outreach Initiatives for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.  In this role, Jennifer leads a team tasked with providing community outreach to address the opioid epidemic.  Jennifer travels the state to assist communities with developing and implementing strategic plans, including grant assistance, programming and training.

Breakout Session 3:  Trauma Informed Services in the Library: Understanding and Serving our Community
What is meant by trauma informed services and how should libraries be involved? This session will explore the effects of trauma on society and how libraries are directly impacted by the trauma and stress carried by the communities they serve. Finding awareness of the effects of trauma on our community leads to more compassion and allows us to dive into our own problem solving skills more effectively. Presenter Elissa Hardy will provide resources and real life examples, as well as discuss the importance of creating a self-care plan for library staff.

At the end of this one-hour session, participants will:
· Understand the effects of trauma on society and how it impacts library services
· Understand the key elements of mental health first aid and how it applies to library services
· Strategies for serving patrons with mental illness
· Understand the importance of building a self-care support community
