KCM Algebra I Lesson Study
Professional Learning Experience

Algebra is more than a collection of rules to memorize and steps to follow!

Join the Kentucky Center for Mathematics and Master Teacher, Anne Burgunder for four days in 2016-17, as we explore productive and exciting ways to address the teaching and learning of Algebra I concepts. Anne Burgunder’s bio can be found here: http://www.metamorphosistlc.com/who-we-are/bios/174-anne-burgunder.html

The Kentucky Center for Mathematics, with support from the Kentucky Department of Education, Northern Kentucky University and the Council on Post-Secondary, is offering a FREE four-day professional learning event for teachers of Algebra I.  One cohort of in-service and pre-service teachers will meet for two days in the fall and two days in the winter.  Participants will engage in lesson studies by jointly drawing up detailed plans for Algebra I lessons.  Then master teacher, Anne Burgunder, will teach an Algebra I lesson in a real classroom (as other group members observe the lesson). The group will then come together to discuss their observations of the lesson and ideas for improvement.

The focus will be on developing lessons that will allow students to engage in algebraic reasoning by recognizing and analyzing patterns, studying and representing relationships, making generalizations, and analyzing change.

Collectively, we will explore essential ideas for learning algebra and will expand our techniques, resources and strategies for teaching algebra in ways that reach a wide range of students.  We will compare symbolic ways of teaching algebra with a contextual approach and explore ways to integrate these two approaches so that ALL students (including those students who are often labeled as “not ready”) gain access to the essential content of this topic. This interactive, hands-and-minds-on learning experience will help participants think about ways of developing Algebra I lessons that are positive and motivating, and ultimately enrich the school mathematics experience.
