KCM is proud to partner with the Kentucky Department of Education to offer middle school educators impactful professional learning experiences (PLEs).  For 6th and 7th grade teachers, the KCM, with grant funding from KDE, plans to provide a free six-day PLE in 2016-17.  This year-long experience allows middle school educators to gain a greater understanding of how 6th and 7th grade students learn mathematics, evidence-based intervention strategies for use with students who are struggling, and resources and professional knowledge for identifying and analyzing student misconceptions.

For this PLE, administrators are encouraged to attend the Day 4 session alongside their teacher(s).  The shifts required by Common Core mean that mathematics instruction is not done by focusing on standards in isolation, but rather with a focus on helping students understand the big and connected ideas of mathematics at a much deeper level.  Administrators, who attend Day 4 of the PLE, will leave the session better equipped to outline a school vision for the instruction that should be taking place in all of their mathematics classrooms.

Participants will:
  • Identify Big Ideas embedded in middle school Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Mathematics and Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Use instructional strategies to improve critical thinking, problem solving, and classroom discourse
  • Explore evidence-based intervention strategies that can be used to help struggling students
  • Analyze student responses and interpret evidence of student understanding and skills
  • Make evidence-based instructional decisions for advancing students' abilities to fluently and flexibly deal with rational numbers
  • Receive resources such as ready-made activities, manipulatives, books, etc.
  • Attend
Participants should be Kentucky 6th or 7th grade educators and are expected to attend all 6 days of the professional learning experience. Teachers who work with 5th or 8th grade students are welcome, but the content focus will be on 6th and 7th grade. It is an expectation that the teacher's principal will attend Day 4 of the PLE for which KCM will request EILA credit. Coaches and instructional supervisors are eligible to attend only if they do so along with a classroom teacher. Coaches/instructional supervisors are also expected to attend all 6 days of the PLE.

Registration will no longer be available for this event after 11:59 p.m. on September 16, 2016.

**IMPORTANT: This professional learning experience is entirely contingent on the receipt of grant funding. If funding is not received, this opportunity will no longer be available. You will be notified if this should occur.**
