Featured Presenters:

Library Lock-Ins, Un-sleepovers, and Zombies, Oh My!
Presented by Rachelle Perry, Youth Services Associate, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library; Office Administrator, NEO-RLS
Rachelle Perry has worked with youth at CH-UH P.L. for almost ten years, the last three of which have been spent every day with the teens in "The Spot", an afterschool program for grades 5-12. She readily admits it can be challenging at times, but the rewards far outweigh those challenges (especially when she wins at Mario Kart!). The focus of her presentation will be two after-hours lock-in programs she has done at the library; an Un-Sleepover for Tween Girls, and a Zombie Party for all the teens. Now, the thought of being locked in a library, after-hours, with a bunch of teens and throwing a party can sound a little (ok, a lot) scary at first, but after this presentation, you'll leave feeling prepared to go back to your library and throw a party of your own!

Scratch Programming: What is it and how you can use it at your library!
Presented by Lynne Keith and Beth Slade, Youth Services Staff, Twinsburg Public Library.
Lynne Keith and Beth Slade are teen librarians from the Twinsburg Public Library. Because of a strong partnership with Twinsburg City Schools, they were able to offer an afterschool Scratch computer programming club to over 100 of the school district's 4-6th graders last winter. Scratch is a FREE programming language and an online community designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the M.I.T. Media Lab. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically.
Along with staff from the public library's computer lab, they presented the highlights of their Scratch club to educators and other librarians at MIT's summer conference in August. While attending this conference they learned of several Scratch extensions to enhance STEM opportunities for tween patrons.

Graphic Novels, Comics, Manga and Anime: Why tweens are so into them, and how you can be too!
Presented by Nick Fagan, Geauga County Public Library.
You’ve probably seen your tweens reading them, the enthusiasm when the latest edition comes out, yet you don’t really know much about them. Here is your chance to learn! Nick Fagan, whose enthusiasm for graphic novels began in the 4th grade, will introduce you to the world of graphic novels, comics, manga and anime, fill you in on the latest and greatest and give you some recommendations your tweens are sure to love!
