Do you sometimes feel as if everyone else is speaking a foreign language when your coworkers and friends talk about Science Fiction? Are you baffled about the difference between Space Opera and Space Exploration novels? Is Steampunk Science Fiction? What about Dystopian novels? Are they SF or Fantasy? Alicia Ahlvers will attempt to answer these questions and more as we discuss the world of Science Fiction and how to develop your Readers Advisory skills in this area. When you leave this session you should have a list of classic and contemporary titles as well as the hot new authors to watch. In addition we will discuss ways librarians can better connect with and serve the SF reader.

After lunch you will be treated to a hands-on book art event conducted by Gene Epstein who currently works as an artist, book artist, bookbinder, exhibit designer, muralist and jazz bassist.  Learn how to turn discarded  books into objects of art.  This is great program to consider bringing to your patrons.  Please bring an old book to work with.

The book art will be followed by two best pracatices:
  • Expanding Book Discussing through Volunteers shared by Karen Woods, Twinsburg Public Library
  • Pushing the Right Books via Email into the Hands of Your Patrons shared by Ed Rossman, Shaker Heights Public Library
